How to Overcome Feeling Overwhelmed as a Busy Mom

Picture
Feeling overwhelmed as a busy Mom can feel constant — the mental load, the emotional weight, the never-ending to-do list. And when Mom feels overwhelmed, stressed, or emotionally overloaded, our kids often feel it too.
A child’s nervous system is deeply connected to their caregiver’s. That means when you’re dysregulated, rushed, or tense, your child may become overwhelmed, emotional, or unsettled as well. The good news? When you calm your nervous system, you naturally help calm your child’s too.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed as a Mom and searching for natural stress relief, gentle routines, and realistic ways to regain clarity, this simple approach can help you reset — without adding more to your plate.

Why feeling overwhelmed as a busy Mom affects your child

Busy Moms carry an invisible mental and emotional load. Managing schedules, meals, emotions, responsibilities, and expectations can keep the nervous system in a constant state of stress.  Sometimes I wonder how mom's truly even function!
When your body perceives stress, it stays in a heightened state of alert. Children sense this — not through words, but through tone, energy, and presence. This is known as co-regulation, and it’s one of the most important concepts in holistic wellness for Moms and kids.
Calming your nervous system isn’t selfish. It’s foundational.

Step 1: Calm your space with gentle aromatherapy

One of the fastest ways to support an overwhelmed nervous system is through scent.
Start with a few sprays of a calming hydrosol in the room you’re in. Lavender and chamomile hydrosols are gentle, grounding, and safe for most households.
These plant waters help signal safety to the nervous system and can support emotional balance for both Mom and child. Even small sensory shifts can create noticeable calm.

Step 2: Use deep breathing to release physical tension

Stress often shows up in the shoulders, neck, and jaw — especially for overwhelmed Moms.
Take a few slow, deep breaths. As you exhale, consciously relax your shoulders. Let them drop. Lengthen the exhale slightly longer than the inhale to help calm your nervous system.
Repeat this for a minute or two. Then gently stretch in a few directions to increase circulation and release the tension your body has been holding.

Step 3: Ground yourself in safety and the present moment

Overwhelm pulls us into future worries and mental spirals. Grounding brings us back to now.
Look around and gently remind yourself:
  • You are safe.
  • Your kids are safe.
  • You are going to be okay.
Then notice what your children are doing. Acknowledge that they are healthy, happy, and well in this moment. This simple practice helps regulate the nervous system and creates emotional clarity.

Step 4: Create a doable daily list (not an overwhelming one)

When you’re feeling overwhelmed as a busy Mom, productivity isn’t about doing more — it’s about doing what matters.
Make a new list for the day:
  • Write down what absolutely needs to be done right now.
  • Next, list what needs to be completed before the end of the day.
  • Then create a separate list of things you would like to accomplish, such as dishes, laundry, or vacuuming.
Be realistic. Consider nap times, school schedules, and activities when assigning time frames.
Always add an extra 30 minutes of buffer time in case you’re interrupted or things take longer than expected.

Step 5: Protect focused time with your kids

Schedule time with your children that is just that — time with your kids.
No multitasking. No rushing to the next task. Just presence.
When children receive focused attention, their nervous system settles — and so does yours. This often makes the rest of the day flow more smoothly and reduces emotional overwhelm for everyone.
If you finish a task early, move to something on your “would like to do” list instead of pushing yourself harder.

A simple herbal tea ritual for natural stress relief

Now brew a warm cup of organic herbal tea to support calm.
Lemon balm, chamomile, and lavender teas have long been used to support relaxation, emotional balance, and nervous system regulation. The warmth, aroma, and pause of a tea ritual can gently signal your body that it’s safe to slow down.
Sip slowly. Breathe. Carry on with your day feeling more grounded and supported.

Overcoming overwhelm as a busy Mom starts with CALM, not control

Overcoming feeling overwhelmed as a busy Mom doesn’t begin with doing more, being more productive, or pushing harder. It starts with creating safety in your body and your home.
When Mom feels calm, clear, and supported, the entire household benefits.
As a nurse, clinical aromatherapist, and holistic wellness educator and coach, I’ve seen how small, consistent nervous-system-supportive practices can completely shift the emotional tone of a family — for both Mom and child.
You’ve got this.
